Last Visit With Yvonne

Last Visit With Yvonne

My heart is heavy
With sorrow & memories
I know I’ll see you in the eternal tomorrow
but still grief weighs heavily

I can see us sipping tea
It’s like a picture frame
You sit to the left of me
You tell me stories of family
members who also drank away the pain
No nonsense allowed
I look out the window & see
the liquor store by the coffee shop
I try not to think aloud
but I can’t help but ask
how one could not
see the irony of what’s at task?
It’s like seeing my numbing self
Hungover the solution next day
You read the Serenity Prayer
to help point out I’m living the wrong way
But I smile & say “Yvonne, I’ve been sober 8 months.”
